The project is presently in the "developmental" phase. Importantly, this initial phase defines what should be part of the project. This effort is being conducted largely by the Shree Pipal Bhanjyang Secondary School in Dhading, Nepal. The local school is in the best position to determine what is necessary as part of the project in order to assure its success. The school is reaching out to individuals who operate other Nepal school youth hostels to learn from their successes and failures.
Ten Friends Board members are planning to visit the school in August 2025 to meet with school representatives and community members to discuss the project in detail. As part of the project development process, a Memorandum of Understanding will be developed to outline the roles and expectations of parties involved in the project.
An important part of the project's consideration is to assure that it is feasible and that it has a high likelihood of resulting in the desired outcomes. There are many key questions that need to be satisfactorily answered. The Ten Friends Board of Directors will only proceed with funding the project based on a positive determination of its feasibility and the likelihood of its long-term sustainability.
As usual, it all comes down to funding -- both for initial project expenses and for assuring that it is sustainable. A funding plan has been developed by the school and several Nepal governments have agreed to fund the project. The funding plan seeks to assure that adequate funding resources ae available to support the project both in the short and long-term.
The Shree Pipal Bhanjyang Secondary School will be responsible for constructing necessary additional hostel facilities. The school has identified empty space that could serve as the hostel site. The hostel is a two-story building with 11 rooms, which are planned to be used as bedrooms, kitchen and dining area, study rooms, and a warden’s room.
Construction is already underway, including fencing, leveling the ground, installing bathrooms, electrical adjustments, and painting. The school plans to open the hostel as soon as the physical infrastructure is complete—provided they can secure one-time funding for furnishing the bedrooms and equipping the kitchen.
The Shree Pipal Bhanjyang Secondary School will operate the hostel. All activities will be managed by the school’s administration, while Ten Friends / donors will provide the necessary funding to support them. If the school can get financial support from the local government or other non-profit organizations, charities, and foundations, the budget would be shared.
The school administration will appoint a hostel teacher, who also teaches at the same school, to tutor the students. The teacher will provide additional lessons in the morning and evening and assist students with their homework. Additionally, a cook/caregiver will be required to help manage the hostel effectively. The project budget covers the stipend for the cook/caregiver.
The Shree Pipal Bhanjyang Secondary School has developed a design for the hostel and for the construction of the required facility improvements. Once improvements are complete, the following actions will be taken:
Monitoring and evaluation of the project will be important to assure that the project is successful. Regularly tracking the progress of students through academic performance, health status, and personal development will be performed. In addition,
a local awareness campaign will be conducted. This will include organized workshops and sessions for attendance by students and their families as well as community leaders.
Ten Friends is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
