Project Plans

The overall plan is designed to help break the cycle of poverty through education

Education has been documented as a long-term strategy for enriching the lives of impoverished and discriminated against individuals such as the Chepang.  We plan to do so by providing children improved access to educational opportunities. This model has been successful in other areas in Nepal, and we are confident that it can be replicated for the Chepang.

Learn about current challenges

The plan is to provide improved educational opportunities

One current challenge is that many students have to travel long distances to attend school; often walks of one to two hours each way from their remote homes. The availability of a student hostel in the school will provide students with a safe and secure place to reside. The hostel should help to retain students in school, minimizing the high dropout rates caused by geographic and logistical challenges.

The development and operation of the hostel will be by the local secondary school in Dhading, Nepal.  The school has proposed the project and is fully dedicated to it.   Ten Friends has been asked to financially contribute to the School Hostel project.

The plan has multiple benefits

Students will reside in a safe shelter and live in a supportive environment close to their place of origin. Nutritious food and health care will be provided. Local culture and traditions will be maintained. Students will develop pride in their cultural identity and feel respected as part of their rural community. A peaceful learning environment and personal tutoring will be provided.  Students will be able to visit their families during holidays and ensure a balance between education and familial ties.

The plan is designed to assure long-term community connection and development

The hope is for graduating students to stay within their local community and to remain connected to their roots. We are confident that students will be able to contribute to their Chepang community after completing their education.
